WA could be hosting cycling tour statewide from the coming year. As per the sources, the UCI, the international body on cycling is getting a firm push from WA to house a UCI-sanctioned riding event.
CIC Events, which was behind Tour of Perth in April, achieved UCI (International Cycling union) permission to host multi-day event which was scheduled as a part of 2013 Perth Cycling Festival. But the scheduled launch could not be realized this year given the lack of adequate funding assistance- however, chances are high for the event to be hosted the following years, i.e. in 2014.
The organizers informed that the scheduled 2-day event will have its stages all through the state, with locations varying each year. The effort is to showcase the regions of WA, which is considered as one of the crucial aspects to draw funds from EventsCorp, the government arm on tourism.
The tour is planned to take to Karratha & Goldfields, Perth and even to Albany in far south. UCI’s sanction will be for some categorized event which could be either at 2.1/ 2.2 level, 3rd -4th tier races, which fall behind top category World Tour championships like Tour de France & 2.HC like Tour of California. The tiers will give the organizers accession to up till 50 % of the UCI ProTeams & the professional riders from Europe, rung below the ProTeam status.
The managing director of CIC Events, Craig Smith-Gander lately reported of his Italy trip this week where he would be having a meet with the UCI officials & his agenda will include discussions on the additional multi-day event to Cycling Festival that has been planned for the coming year.
“UCI happily granted us 2.1 status past year, yet we were unable to come up with the needed funding. I’ll be in Italy to have a talk with UCI officials about the events we could deliver”, stated Smith-Gander. Added to it, he stressed that the goal is to cover a period show of 3-years all across WA.
